Milford Sound gets over a million visitors a year, and most of them arrive in the same few hours. You cannot have the fiord to yourself, but you can miss the worst of it. It comes down to when you sail, which boat you pick and where you start. Starting in Te Anau helps most, and the Milford Sound tours from Te Anau are the easiest way to do it.

When does Milford Sound fill up?

DOC puts visitors at over one million a year, up from about 437,000 to 883,000 in six years. There is one road in, and the day trips share it. So the crowd is not spread across the day: it arrives with the coaches.

The busy hours are around the middle of the day. The quiet ones are early morning, late afternoon and the night, when only the overnight boats are on the water.

Why does a coach wave arrive around midday?

Because Queenstown is four to five hours away. The vans leave at 6:30 or 7am, and one coach at 7:20am. Allow two hours to Te Anau, a coffee break, and two hours of stops in the national park, and they reach the fiord late in the morning or around noon.

Every road day from Queenstown runs to the same arithmetic, so they arrive together. At the terminal that means a queue at the counters; on the boats, a full rail. The pattern is simple. Sail before the coaches or after they leave, and the terminal and the boat are calmer.

Is the first or last cruise quieter?

Usually, yes. One catamaran operator runs a mid-morning, a lunchtime and a 3:50pm sailing. If the coaches arrive around midday, the mid-morning and 3:50pm boats are the ones that miss them. KerrieAnne_P took the last cruise of the day and wrote that it wasn't busy.

To take an early boat you need to be at the fiord early, which means driving in or staying nearby. Allow up to an hour to park and walk to the terminal, and check in 30 minutes before you sail. Every day cruise is on Milford Sound boat tours.

Do small boats feel less crowded?

They carry fewer people, so there is more room at the rail. The boats here state their limits, and they range widely.

A big boat has more indoor seats and a steadier deck; a small one gets closer to the walls. Roger H. found the big boat very crowded and would drive in and hike next time. Sergio said the smaller boat meant fewer people, and a captain who could manoeuvre in close.

Can you beat the crowds from Te Anau?

Yes, more easily than from anywhere else. Te Anau is about two hours from the water, so you can reach the fiord before the Queenstown coaches, or after they have gone. DOC puts the round trip at 240 km and an eight-hour day with the sights.

Take a Te Anau day, or drive yourself and book an early or late sailing. The walking day from Te Anau spends about three and a half hours on guided walks, away from the terminal.

Does flying in avoid them?

It avoids the road, not the water. A flight from Queenstown lands at the airstrip in about 40 minutes, so the fly-cruise days can put you on an early boat. But you still cruise at a set time with whoever else is on board.

The one-way flight out leaves at 12:30pm. Drive in early, cruise before the coaches, and fly home as they arrive. Flights are compared on Milford Sound scenic flights.

What about a night on the water?

It is the one sure way. The overnight boats board in the late afternoon, anchor for the night, and return the next morning. The larger boat takes up to 64 and anchors in Harrison Cove; the smaller takes 22.

You see the fiord after the day trips have gone and before the next ones arrive. Both are non-refundable, so be sure of your dates. Both are on Milford Sound overnight cruises.

Which months are quietest?

Winter. DOC notes that traffic numbers are low from May to September, and advises leaving later in the morning, from 9am, because the road can be icy. The trade is shorter days, snow chains and the chance of an avalanche closure.

Where should you park before the rush?

The main car park costs NZ$10 an hour, card only, and it can be busy: one operator asks you to allow up to an hour to park and walk in. The free car park at Deepwater Basin is about 40 minutes' walk from the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal. Arrive early and you can choose.

What does a quiet day from Te Anau look like?

Here is one way to do it if you drive, built from DOC's advice and the tours' own timings. Adjust it for the season and your sailing.

  1. Leave Te Anau early with a full tank, food and water. There is no fuel or shop until you are back.
  2. Stop at the Mirror Lakes while they are still calm. The walk is 400 m return and takes about 10 minutes.
  3. Pass the tunnel before the coaches reach it, and the lights move quickly.
  4. Park and check in 30 minutes before a mid-morning sailing.
  5. Walk the foreshore after the boat, while the coach passengers are on the water. It takes 20 to 30 minutes.
  6. Drive back as the coaches arrive, with the road ahead of you mostly empty.

What can you do while the boats are busy?

Walk. The foreshore walk starts by the terminal and takes 20 to 30 minutes, and DOC calls it the best view of Mitre Peak from land. It costs nothing, and at midday it is quieter than the boats.

If you have three or four hours, a boat takes you to the end of the Milford Track for $43, and you walk toward a waterfall and back at your own pace. On the drive, The Chasm is a 400 m return walk of about 20 minutes to a viewing point; the river can no longer be crossed. How busy is the road and the tunnel?

The Homer Tunnel is one lane, with traffic lights in the summer peak. DOC warns of waits of up to 20 minutes. Leave early and you pass before the coaches; leave late and you wait behind them.
