Milford Sound sits at the end of a single road, 120 km past Te Anau. You can drive it, ride it on a coach or a small-group van, or fly over it. Most people start in Queenstown, and the Milford Sound tours from Queenstown make the whole day for you. Here is how each way works, and what it asks of you.
The four ways in
Every way in ends at the same water. What changes is how long your day is and how much of it you spend in a seat. A road day from Queenstown gives you about two hours on the fiord inside a day of 11 to 13 hours. A flight turns most of that driving into about 40 minutes in the air.

From Queenstown
Queenstown is where most visitors stay, and it is a long way out. DOC puts the return trip at 600 km and 12 to 14 hours. It suggests you plan the trip from Te Anau instead if you can.
A coach day from Queenstown runs like this, going by one operator's timetable. Times move a little by season and by company, and the cruise is booked for you.
- Early morning Pickup in Queenstown. About 2 hours by coach to Te Anau.
- Te Anau A 30-minute break for coffee and the toilets.
- The park About an hour to the photo stops: Mirror Lakes, the Eglinton Valley and Monkey Creek.
- The tunnel Through the Homer Tunnel and down to the fiord.
- Midday The cruise, out to the Tasman Sea and back.
- Afternoon About 2 hours back to Te Anau, and a 15-minute break.
- Evening About 2 h 15 min on to Queenstown.

From Te Anau
Te Anau is the last town before the fiord, 120 km away. DOC puts the return trip at 240 km and about eight hours with stops and a cruise. That is half the driving of a Queenstown day, which is why a night in Te Anau makes the trip easier.
Here is a Te Anau coach day, going by its own listing:
- 9:45am Check in at the operator's office on Lakefront Drive, 15 minutes before a 10am start.
- The Eglinton Valley A 10-minute stop.
- Mirror Lakes A 15-minute stop for the short walk.
- Monkey Creek A 15-minute stop, where the kea gather.
- The fiord About 2 h 20 min at the water, the cruise included.
- Late afternoon The drive back, about 8.5 hours after you left.
Driving yourself
Driving gives you the stops on your own clock, and it is the cheapest way in. The Milford Road is also narrow, winding and remote. DOC allows about two hours from Te Anau without stops, and busy months are October to April. Before you set off, work through this list.
- Fill up in Te Anau. There are no shops or fuel stations on the road.
- Take food and insect repellent. DOC suggests both.
- Know where the toilets are: only at Te Anau, Knobs Flat and the fiord.
- Expect a wait at the Homer Tunnel. Traffic lights run it in summer, with delays of up to 20 minutes.
- Do not stop in the avalanche zone. The stretch from the Hollyford Road junction to The Chasm is a no-stopping zone.
- In winter, carry chains. From May to September the road can be icy. You can hire chains in Te Anau, and DOC suggests leaving after 9am.
If you are not confident on snow and ice, DOC's advice is simple: take a bus.
By coach or small-group van
A road tour takes the driving off you. You get a driver who talks you through the valley, the stops, and a cruise booked into the day. Big coaches carry up to 48 or 49 people. The small-group vans stop at 15, and most include lunch.
Pickups are in central Queenstown or Te Anau, and several collect you from your hotel. DOC also notes bus services from the fiord back to Te Anau and Queenstown.

By plane or helicopter
A flight is the fastest way in. The fly-cruise-fly days leave Queenstown, cross the Southern Alps in about 40 minutes, land at the airstrip beside the fiord, and fly you back after a cruise. A one-way flight out takes about 35 minutes if you drove or walked in.
Cloud decides whether you fly, so leave a spare day if the flight matters to you. Check the weight limit before you book; the helicopter flight from the airstrip sets 120 kg a person.

Parking at the fiord
If you drive in, you park at the end of the road. The main car park is about a 10-minute walk from the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal and costs NZ$10 an hour, paid by card. The free car park at Deepwater Basin is about 40 minutes' walk away. Allow time for both: in the busy months, finding a space and walking in can take up to an hour.

When the road closes
DOC tells you to expect closures and delays from weather, rock falls, and snow and avalanches in winter. If the road closes on your day, this is what to do.
- Check the road status the evening before and again in the morning.
- On a tour, wait for the operator. They cancel or move the trip, and a tour cancelled for weather is refunded or rebooked.
- If you drive, turn back in Te Anau, not at the tunnel. There is no fuel and little signal past it.
- Keep a spare day in your plans if the fiord is the point of your trip.

Can you fly to Milford Sound?
Yes. Fly-cruise-fly trips from Queenstown take 4 to 5 hours, with flights of about 40 minutes each way and a cruise in between. Cloud can stop a flight, so leave a spare day in your plans if you can.
What happens if the road closes on my tour day?
The operator cancels or reschedules, and a tour cancelled for weather or a road closure is refunded or moved. Check the road status the evening before if you are driving.
Is there a public bus to Milford Sound?
Yes. DOC notes bus services from the fiord back to Te Anau and on to Queenstown, and suggests a bus if you are not confident driving in winter. Check the timetable with the bus company before you plan around it.
