The Milford Track Day Walk from Milford Sound

The Milford Track is a four-day Great Walk, and it ends at Milford Sound. You can walk its last section in half a day, with no hut booking and no pack, and be back for a cruise. Of all the Milford Sound hike tours, this is the one where walking is the whole point.

The Great Walk's last kilometres

The full Milford Track runs 53.5 km, one way, from the head of Lake Te Anau to the fiord. It takes four days, and in the Great Walks season, 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027, you must book its three huts well ahead. Camping is not allowed. DOC dates the track's opening to 1889.

The track finishes at Sandfly Point, across the water from the terminal. Its last 3 km are a smooth, wide path that a prison labour gang built between 1890 and 1892. That end of the track is the part you can walk in a day.

Multi-day walkers reach Sandfly Point on their fourth day, after 18 km from the last hut. They meet an early-afternoon boat, a 20-minute ride to the village. As a day walker you do the reverse: you arrive by boat, walk in, and leave before the through-walkers arrive.

The trail follows the Arthur River here, on the valley floor, through the ancient rainforest the whole track is known for.

Sandfly Point by water taxi

You reach Sandfly Point by boat, because no road goes there. The day-walk water taxi leaves from Deepwater Basin Road, a short drive from the terminal, and brings you back at the end. The fare covers the return boat.

The walk to Giant Gate Falls

From the landing you walk in along the valley to Giant Gate Falls, the highlight of this end of the track. Then you turn and walk back. The operator calls the track flat and easy-going, and there is no climb to speak of.

  1. Meet at the boat on Deepwater Basin Road, a short drive back from the terminal. There is free parking at Deepwater Basin.
  2. Cross by water taxi to Sandfly Point, where the Great Walk ends.
  3. Walk in on the smooth, wide track that a prison labour gang built in the 1890s, beside the Arthur River.
  4. Turn at Giant Gate Falls, the highlight of the walk, and rest before you head back.
  5. Walk out the same way to Sandfly Point.
  6. Cross back to Deepwater Basin. The whole outing takes 3 to 4 hours.

Self-guided, and what that means

The day walk is self-guided. Nobody walks with you, so you set the pace, and you carry what you need. The track is not suited to wheelchairs. Before you go, run through this list.

Walking it vs the other short walks

You do not need to walk half a day to get into the forest. DOC's short walks on the Milford Road take 10 to 45 minutes, and the foreshore walk starts beside the terminal. Here is how the track day walk compares.

If you have an hour, walk the foreshore. If you have half a day and want the forest, walk the track. If you are driving in from Te Anau, the road walks fit between the stops, and Mirror Lakes suits a wheelchair.

The track day walk also pairs well with a cruise. Walk in the morning and take a boat in the afternoon, or cruise first and walk after lunch. Either way, you need most of a day at the fiord.

Weather and the boat

DOC records up to 9,000 mm of rain a year in the park, and the weather can change quickly in any season. Rain does not stop the walk on its own, but high water or wind can stop the boat. Here is what to do if the weather turns.

  1. Check the forecast the evening before.
  2. If the operator cancels for weather, you are refunded or moved to another day.
  3. If you want to cancel, do it at least 24 hours ahead for a full refund.
  4. Keep a spare half-day if the walk matters to you.

Can you walk the Milford Track in a day?
You can walk its last section, from Sandfly Point to Giant Gate Falls and back, in 3 to 4 hours with a water-taxi transfer. The full track takes four days and needs hut bookings.
Is the Milford Track day walk guided?
No. It is self-guided: the water taxi takes you to the track and collects you, and you walk at your own pace. If you want a guide, look at a guided walking day from Te Anau instead.
Do I need a hut booking for the day walk?
No. Hut bookings are for walkers staying overnight on the four-day track. On the day walk you sleep in no hut, so you only book the water taxi.
Can children do the Milford Track day walk?
The walk is flat and the operator calls it family-friendly. DOC advises against the full four-day track for children under 10, which is a different walk.
