A day built on walks, not on the drive
From Queenstown, the drive swallows most of the day. From Te Anau it is about two hours each way, and DOC allows an eight-hour day for the 240 km round trip with stops and a cruise. This tour spends the difference outside. After the cruise you get about three and a half hours of guided stops and short walks in Fiordland National Park, each 5 to 30 minutes long.
The walks change with the season and the weather, and the guide picks them on the day. The day can reach the Hollyford Valley, Lake Gunn and the Marian Gantry. David's guide stopped at Mirror Lakes on the way in. Amy's took a short walk on the way back to see birds and moss-covered trees. The two-hour small-boat cruise
At the water you board a small boat for a two-hour cruise out to the Tasman Sea and back. David found it small next to the others at the dock, and liked it better for that. Adam's advice is to stand at the front and ride in under a waterfall. You pass Mitre Peak on the way out, and the falls come close.
The weather can move the sailing. Simarpreet's first cruise was cancelled, and the team rebooked a later one and kept the group busy until it left. Three and a half hours in the national park
The walks are the reason to pick this day. They are short, most under half an hour, and they go into the forest rather than just to a lookout. Mary's two children had a guide who showed them birds and plants on the walk. Leo's guide stopped many times for the view and took photos for the group.

Picnic lunch and pickup
The guide collects you from your accommodation in central Te Anau, and brings you back to the door. A packed picnic lunch is in the fare, and Simarpreet's diets were catered for. There is no pickup in Queenstown on this day, so stay the night in Te Anau before.
